it’s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco’s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. ‘te revoir’ is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper’s beatles. ‘free love’ offers a respectful nod towards je t’aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, ‘revolution’ gets hard and funky and ‘rain’ flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare – and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone – free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

lady blacktronika : she needs no introduction to the usual skylax heads, after last year’s killer ‘it’s a blacktronika world’ ep, the queen of beatdown returns to the skylax fold with a packed eleven track lp for us. it has got her signature slo-mo grooves, as well as a couple of housier cuts on the back-end of the record. naturally, a lot of these tracks are perfect for the club on their own, whether it’s an early set or a late one, but the lp really stands up on a full run through for home listening too. on the topside of the record, there’s the chugging vibe of “who doctor”, with its whirling synth and sizzling hats perfect for that low light, early mood. then you have the likes of “how i miss my x”, and titular track “a lonely space program”, that both raise the tempo into housier territory. all bases covered, really. this record is a slice of beatdown history, one you’d be a fool to sleep on!

hotflush welcome lara wehbie aka blursome to the ranks with her debut ep “rendition of you”. raised in north carolina and currently residing in brooklyn, wehbie has come a long way since beginning to work on music in 2011 as a way of channeling her diagnosed depression and anxiety. she describes her work as a transitional darkness, something she says defined her sound even before she could manage the software she uses to make it. in her own words, “rendition of you ep signifies major transitions in my life over the past year and how my environment truly played a role in handling situations. it s a testament to how much happier i am now than i used to be. i still struggle but i m truly thankful for the influences i have around me that have made me a better individual and artist.” along the way she has attended the red bull music academy bass camp in 2015, and after an appearance on scuba s 2016 fabric mix, she debuts on the label with an experimental six track ep. side a of -rendition of you- introduces listeners to her experimental use of vocals and heavy percussive influences from the left field genre. side b dives straight into dance floor material with pounding kicks and and interjecting vocals, but then slowly winds down into a more melancholic ending with piercing synths rattling through to the last drop.

nathan bartell grew up in a little town called ashburn, georgia but soon moved to atlanta georgia where he began to perform in the night clubs. in 1973 he released “top going down, bottom going up” on the soul-po-tion label. bartell remembers: “at the time i was having family problems. my wife didn’t want me and i was deep in love. i felt at that time that i was at the bottom of the pit and i wanted to rise up out of that mess because my wife made me feel that i was a nobody. i was not good enough for her - nobody wants you when you are down and out. she felt that she were on the top and i was on the bottom. this song was a message at that time.” there is nothing for us to add except that we are delighted to bring this little beauty back to new life.

jackie is a biographical film from chilean director pablo larraín. starring natalie portman (black swan) in the title role, the movie follows jacqueline kennedy from the days when she was first lady of the white house to the aftermath of the assassination of john f. kennedy. critically lauded since its debut at the venice film festival where it won the best screenplay award, jackie also received the platform prize at the toronto international film festival and is a heavy favorite going into awards season.
the score to jackie was composed by experimental british musician mica levi, best known for her ethereal score to 2013’s sleeper hit under the skin. mournful and eerie with a touch of the surreal, levi has delivered an unmistakable musical tapestry every bit as iconic as jackie o herself.

tucked away in a now not-so-quiet corner of south east london, wholemeal have been quietly, unobtrusively getting shit done. wholemeal music’s freshman release hits the shelves this month featuring two cuts from yam records boss tom esselle and a hoofing remix from fellow south-londoner west norwood cassette library. skilfully treading the line between house, techno, and jazz, the a-side, until she spoke is a superlative exercise in light-touc h sampling and devastatingly effective rhodes work. it shuffles then stomps, hypnotises then elates, bringing together disparat e threads to create something for the head and the heart. the title track, garibaldi, maintains the light-touch sampling thread and then takes it to a whole new plane of drum-driven dancefloor detonation. twisting chord hits whirl around a savage interplay between bass and drums before dropping back to an elemental pounding, bypassing the brain and heading straight for the feet. long time wholemeal friend and serious contender for the nicest man in music award bob wncl has very kindly picked up garibaldi by the scruff of the neck, grafted an enormous pair of junglist balls onto it and kicked it screaming across t he dancefloor. this is about as peak-time as it gets. wait for the wall of bass after the second drop, its enough to stop you breathing.

air cushion finishsdistinctive sound palette reconciles pop music with experimental electronics, think alan bishop meets white noise (with a touch of super collider?) air cushion finish formed in berlin in 2007 and comprises of composer jayrope and natural vocal synthesizer lippstueck, who have graced berlin’s underground scene together since the 1990 s. lippstueck sings, wordless and backwards in time while his partner jayrope tends diy, electronic, string or percussion instruments small enough to fit into a small suitcase. changing setup and subsequently music is programmatic to the band, resulting into an unforeseeable slow motion cacophony of whispers, bleeps, rhythms and harmonies. theres a notion of dada, but you never know. the 8th album of acf marks their current state of poetical accident, swaying, swinging and bouncing, boldly careful, like a transparent tattoo on your forehead.

michigan artist john beltran s 13th studio album and 3rd on delsin is his most complete and personal work yet. written largely on modular synthesizers for the first time, it melts 90s intelligent techno with post rock and ambient with leftfield downtempo. the seventeen tracks draw on his expert knack for sound design, for melody and atmosphere and make for yet another hugely absorbing affair.

to wrap up 2016, true romance unleashes one more disco stunner. this time the fabulous three tracks 12 comes from the classically trained yet funky to the bone: phil gerus. the russian producer has been a rising force of the modern disco movement with releases on futureboogie, sonar kollektiv, thugboat edits to name a few. the make time ep, his first offering on true romance, confirms gerus is here to stay. the a side, she is wearing her black boots again, is meant to played very loud and very late in a dark smoke-filled room. its a raw thumper with a thick post-disco bass line, robotic italo synth, dreamy chopped up vocals all layered with catchy mysterious chords. the flipside starts with the irresistible make time, a groovy number with loopy funk guitars, soulful vocals and infectious keys that will stick to you like glue. for the grande finale, gerus serves us detective from kamakura: a gritty electronic funk track with banging percussions and delirious moans that will keep you awake until the break of dawn.

the number of bad luck is the number of good luck in our world. antoine harispuru aka golden bug is back on lddlm with what has been a constant night hit for ivan smagghe since he magically received it. we are very happy to share it with you. progress feat. diego holdez kind of defies categorisation, and blows the walls of the classic slow downed clocks of golden bug. we d describe it as vocal funk? you may describe it the way you want. ask your girlfriend, she seems to love it. on remix duty, miami come berlin bad boy danny daze a rest from the big room for a pounding omnidisc version that will slowly burns through any leather jacket, very corrosive stuff. physical disco is classic golden bug, a demented industrial pinball machine of some kind. whilst supernova is that exact machine played by a retro-futurist vocoder robot. think aux 88 played at 33rpm and you ll be as close as you can.

(lena platonos) is a greek musician, pianist and music composer. one of the pioneers of greek electronic music, she remains active today. lena was born in heraklion, crete, and grew up in athens. she began learning how to play the piano at the age of two and became a professional pianist before turning eighteen. soon afterwards, she received a scholarship to study in the the berlin and vienna academies , where she was exposed to jazz, rock and middle eastern music. she returned to greece in the late 70s and began working with the hellenic broadcasting corporation.
